Rep. McClintock Challenges Secretary Salazar on Regulatory Drought and Delta Smelt

By Jon Huey on September 18, 2009

Hear for yourself why Secretary Salazar won't help farmers in the Central Valley.

Here is the image that Rep. McClintock showed to Sec. Salazar of imported sliced carrots from China being handed out to starving out of work farmers and farm workers.

This is 100% California

By Anonymous (not verified) on September 26, 2009

This is 100% California water, so how do the feds have any authority over it in the first place?  Why does anyone think that we have go crawling and begging to Salazar or anyone else in fedgov to stop the diversion?  The solution is simple: just assert our sovereign state rights under the 10th Amendment, thumb our noses at the feds, and turn on the water ourselves!  We don't need to ask anyone's permission in fedgov to have our own water.  Schwarzenegger could do this all by himself right now if he had the constitutional understanding and guts to do so.  The legislature could pass a bill asserting our rights under the 10th Amendment to show their support as well.

I say just take what is rightfully ours and tell the feds to go take a hike!

Sec. Salazar

By Anonymous (not verified) on October 10, 2009

The delta smelt is more important to environmental lawyers than human life and suffering. Salazar   did not answer  the questions he was asked  and instead gave a bureaucratic justification  for lack of action.  The EPA and their lawyers have brought California Agriculture to its knees and some damage may be permanent. Time for the Govenator to show leadership through action and turn the water on.

What about the California National Guard?

By Mike (not verified) on September 27, 2009

Why doesn't the Governor appoint the California National Guard to turn on the water and protect it from federal agencies turning it off? This seams like a no-brainer.

Secretary Salazar is right in that the politics of water, like everything else in California is screwed-up. He's probably somewhat bitter given that he's a farmer from Colorado. With that said, it sounds like he's playing politics with the livelyhoods of thousands. It's wrong, but that's what happens when you give the feds more power. Especially left leaning feds. California voters need to wake-up. They've been asleep for far too long.

Good luck and God Bless,

Mike

I love California. I'm not

By Russell Floyd (not verified) on September 25, 2009

I love California. I'm not much of a regular traveler, but have lived here all my 30 years, and have had the privilege of experiencing much of the breathtaking beauty here. This is truly one of the most exquisite states God gave man.

Our wine country in both the north and south has got to be some of the most green, lush landscape this side of eternity. Our mountains, forests, and beaches are utterly captivating. And yes, the breadbasket in our valley is one of the most immmense, glorious stretches of fertile, rolling land the eye can see. We have been blessed with everything nature can possibly contain in this state.

The deep-seated, bitter irony is that much of it is being destroyed in the name of environmentalism.

Tom,

Thanks for caring about California Ag.  The person you need to get in the face of  is our great Govenator who is the Govenor of the 8th largest economy in the world.  He gives only lip service and does nothing.  With his power he should be kicking down the White House door and getting in Obama's face about California Ag and the California economy, but he doesn't seem to have the guts to do anything but say "I am doing evthrything I can to get moe waater for California Agriculture"  Shame on you Govenator!!!!

TURN ON THE WATER

By Mark (not verified) on September 23, 2009

Apparently Salazar thinks that unemployment rates over 40% and tens of thousands of people in food lines due to the actions of the Federal Government isn't "failure."   Is is just me, or did we slip down the rabbit hole and find our way to Wonderland?  Elite DC snobs like Salazar are truly disconnected from the reality of folks on the ground.  Apparently, DC is in a parallel universe where "success" means folks out of work and waiting in food lines due to a government imposed drought.

Congress-made drought

By Tuesday (not verified) on September 22, 2009

There is an emergency. So why the delay in involving the so-called God squad to supply the water we need now? Sec. Salazar doesn't want to accept that the administration's and congress' policy with regards the water distribution/allocation is a failure? Why not? Because he cannot admit being wrong, it is ok with him if whole communities in the Valley starve?

The law he is hiding behind is wrong, thus needs to be corrected.

Tom McClintock defender of We the People

By Celeste (not verified) on September 22, 2009

I'm not surprise one bit of Secretary Salazar's weak and not convincing response about our water crisis here in California, and also I'm not surprise about the strong and articulate questions from Tom McClintock to the Secretary.  Congressman McClintock has always been a defender of the Constitution, of WE THE PEOPLE and a no NON SENSE individual.

Thank you Tom for a real well done job in the Congress of the United States of America, you represent your district with distinction and courage, there is only very few elected officials who get elected to public office and don't became corrupted and complacent; Tom McClintock is one of the very few, very rare and thank God!

Humans vs fish

By Lisa A (not verified) on September 22, 2009

Very Important: When I drive on Interstate 5,
past the signs that protest this water diversion,
it would be great for farmers to state that their farms are barren because water is going to protect smelt instead...
with Sec. Salazar's phone number displayed.

Sec. Salazar's evasion of the water diversion is criminal.
Are smelt more important than people's lives?

Water to the Central Valley

By Joan (not verified) on September 22, 2009

I agree with all of the above comments.  The government is supposed  to be for the people, not special interest (such as the delta smelt).  Thank you for fighting for common sense and against stupidity.  If water is such a problem, we should quit building new homes and golf courses.  And I agree that we should have solar powered desalinazation plants.  However, I'm sure the EPA would find some reason to stall their being built.

Desalination Plants

By Kenneth Canova (not verified) on September 23, 2009

While we all agree that a desalination plant on the West side of Fresno County is an optimal move, however solar power will not cut it. It takes alot of engergy to remove salt and/or alkaline from from water. There is currently a group in Fresno looking into this solution using Nuclear power, and any excess power would be relayed off to the grid. This is something that all valley residents should get behind not just Fresno County

Great idea -- to build and

By Linda D in NV (not verified) on September 25, 2009

Great idea -- to build and operate a desalination plant using nuclear power.  I've been saying for a couple of years that there should be desalination facilities on both coasts.  Remember a couple of years ago when Atlanta was about 60 days away from having no water?  Pumping water out of the oceans could help keep the levels in check, too, as the polar ice caps continue to melt.  (sarcasm off now)

California Water

By John & Cherie Gerbo (not verified) on September 22, 2009

Congressman McClintock,

Thank you for taking on this fight for our state.  The water crisis in our Central Valley here in California is huge and needs to be fixed RIGHT NOW!  Not tomorrow or the next day.  Since Secretary Salazar wants to take his sweet time to resolve this issue, in the meantime he should keep the water flowing.  His response to you was total arrogance.

Please maintain this fight!  Thank you.

Your thoughtful representation in Congress.

By Scott E. Carter, Esq. (not verified) on September 22, 2009

God bless you and your family, Tom.  You are the beginning of the wave of intelligent people going to Washington to take on the "business as usual" "good-ole-boys" club of polititians.  You have never been afraid to stand alone for conservative principles and I am sure you will begin to see some support from new congressmen to be elected in 2010.  I am ever hopeful that more Americans will wake up to the fact that the "feel good" selection process for our legislators doesn't serve our interest and that serious analysis of the candidates track records on the issues is needed in every election to vote responsibly.  Keep up the great work that you are doing, and stay healthy.  We need you, Tom, for many years to come.

Thank you for your leadership!

I-5 dust bowl

By Gerald Booth (not verified) on September 22, 2009

I just returned from a road trip to southern California and was blown away at the lack of crops along both sides of Interstate 5.  I saw dead orchards with some of the lifeless trees falling over and hundreds of thousands of acres of no plant life, just a dust bowl waiting to happen.  Secretary Salazar should be removed from office and replaced with a common sense leader of either party that immediately releases water to the central valley.   These environmental laws are insane where a fish is more important than a people.  This same issue bankrupted many farmers in the Klamath Valley in Oregon a decade ago.  Maybe they want to bankrupt more farmers to get their land for some mega agriculture companies.  I smell a money Rat.  Who is paying off these water restricters to drive farmers to bankruptcy.

Keep up the good fight Tom!

Representative McClintock:

As you know there were 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence.  Glen Beck has requested 56 legislators to sign up on his program to help root out greed, graft and corruption in our government. He has promised to keep their names private though I fail to see why anyone would want to remain anonamous in persuit of such a noble endeavor.  You, sir, are the perfect candidate.  Please contact Glen Beck and sign up!

Desalinization, why not????

By Derek D (not verified) on September 22, 2009

California has hundreds of miles of coastline and almost 365 day sunshine.  Why can't we have solar powered desalinization plants to supplement water needs to the coastal cities so that the farmers can have more water for agriculture.  I just don't get this state, we have a great abundance of possibilities and potential but a liberal/progressive legislature which wants legislate us back to the stone age.  Wait, I better make sure that statement is accurate, the carbon footprint of cavemen might be too high for their satisfaction, they may instead want to legislate humanity out of existence.

Federally Regulated Destruction in San Jauquin Valley

By Patty Nottoli (not verified) on September 22, 2009

Congressman McClintock, you need to become a regular guest on Sean Hannity's show, or Greta's.  You need FOX and FOX needs you.  You should also try to get on RedEye.   The nation needs your voice.   Tell your press agent to get busy booking you on these important shows now!  You're a clear voice for sanity.  You're a constitutional scholar and you know how to balance a budget.  Please hold the feet of this mechanical robot, Salazar, to the fire until he reverses the federal mandates that are causing the destruction of our national food supply in the San Juaquin V alley.

And while you're at it please help us get a desalinization plant built on the coast of California.

God bless you.

Patty

The bottom line--

By Anonymous (not verified) on September 22, 2009

Because of the Darwinistic smothering our culture has been given, we no longer have any moral "authority" to declare humanity as needier than the smelt. To atheists, the fish is a co-inhabotor and co-equal in every sense to mankind. I.e., "Screw you and your jobs, children and future, the fish is as important as you, so go pound sand, you Republicans!"

This is the kind of zombielike leadership a generation of neo-atheists have brought on all of us. If you want relief, read the Bible and find where you can go when you die-- it's not going to improve here until the Berkelys and Harvards of this country reject the evolutionist thought that gave us this predicament.

Unbelievable

By Dee (not verified) on September 22, 2009

Salazar basically says NOTHING!  McClintock is great--he nails Salazar--what an embarassment to our nation.  Right now, they need to turn on the spigot...but the leftists in Washington need their "crises"... Note Salazar's concern about the "species" affected by drought--but not the human species.

I cannot help but wonder why food lines with food from China and 40% unemployment doesn't bring the same level of alarm to the "human rights" folks as did Katrina..oh, that's right--Katrina was under a Republican President and Obama's a lib....

The left is sinking our country.

Water in the Delta

Unbelievable to me that Sec. Salazar will not recognize this situation as a disaster and provide the overriding relief that is necessary for these farmers.  It seems that he basically just does not care that people are suffering.  I realize that we need to overhaul our water system in California, but what is the solution for these people in the Delta right now?

Water to Central Valley

By SUSAN NEWCOMER (not verified) on September 22, 2009

What ever happened to HUMANITY!!!!!!!????!!!  Why is the life of the smelt more important than the men, women and children in that area.  Why is it OK for these people who are suffering to have to be fed by CHINA of all places?  What is the matter with you people???  Have you lost all common sense???  The answer is YES - you gave it away willingly.  How in the world do you sleep at night?  All I know is that what goes around, comes around full circle to those who do good as well as to those who do bad to their fellow man.  How sad that those in POWER (in their own minds) think they have the right to foist these miserable conditions on people who are beneath them (again, in their minds).  Shame on you, shame, shame, shame on you all!!!  We all have to suffer the consequences for our actions.  Heaven help you if you keep on with this unwillingness to do the right thing.  Are you so far gone that you can't see what that is anymore?  For those of us who follow the rules and do what is right - we will  reap the benefits.  You can change the course of this terrible situation in the Central Valley - if you have any sense of decency within you, please do the right thing and TURN THE WATER ON NOW!!!

Health care reform

By Anonymous Mavis Crissinger (not verified) on September 19, 2009

In regard to Max Baucus bill to tax high value insurance plan:  I think this is absurd, the people who have worked hard and long for good insurance do not need to be taxed for their effort.  They are the ones who are already overtaxed.  I would like to see what the government officials think of  giving  up some of their superior benefits or,  be taxed additionally for them.  The United States has bigger issues to deal with (two wars, unemployment, etc.}.  Now is not the time for a huge overhaul of the health care system.
