This is an overwhelmingly Republican district; Democrats are not competitive in Federal election contests.
Rep. John Doolittle has represented the 4th congressional district since 1991. Since then it has been a consistently Republican area and district. California’s 4th Congressional district is widely considered to be California’s most conservative Republican congressional seat.
With the retirement of Rep. John Doolittle, this leaves one of California’s most Republican congressional districts up for grabs.
The district encompases the following counties:
- Butte County
- El Dorado County
- Lassen County
- Modoc County
- Nevada County
- Placer County
- Plumas County
- Sacramento County
- Sierra County
